In Polish ‘no’ with nouns is written together

Sometimes you may encounter strange words that appear to be verbs, but are actually nouns. For example, the word ‘palenie’ (smoking) is a noun: ‘Palenie w tym miejscu jest surowo zabronione’. The verb is: ‘palić’ (to smoke) – ‘Nie wolno tutaj palić!’

Negation, what means adding the particle ‘nie’ (no) to a word, has its own rules for correct spelling.

1. We write ‘no’ together with nouns, e.g., ‘niepalenie’ (Niepalenie papierosów jest zdrowsze od palenia)
2. We write ‘no’ together with adjectives, e.g., ‘niewysoki’ (Niewysoki mężczyzna pojawił się w drzwiach)
3. We write ‘no’ separately with verbs, e.g., ‘nie skakać’ (Prosimy nie skakać po barierkach)
4. We write ‘no’ separately with adverbs, e.g., ‘nie warto’ (Nie warto tu dużo pracować, bo i tak dużo się nie zarobi)
