Polish Language Certificate – Why Is It So Important?

Currently, many foreigners living in Poland are planning their future in our country. According to estimates from various sources, the largest groups of foreign nationals in Poland come from Ukraine (approx. 70%), Belarus (approx. 8%), Germany (approx. 5%), as well as Russia, Vietnam, India, Italy, Georgia, China, and the United Kingdom (approx. 2–3%), and Moldova and South Korea (approx. 0.2%).

An important aspect of life in Poland that newcomers must face is obtaining an official Polish language Certificate confirming their proficiency in the Polish language as a foreign language.

What Does a Polish Certificate Provide?

A Polish Certificate offers numerous opportunities, including:

• The possibility to apply for Polish citizenship
• The opportunity to study in Polish at a Polish university
• The right to apply for a Residence Card and the EU Long-Term Resident Card

• Official confirmation of your Polish language skills

Which Polish Language Certificates Are Recognized?

Official confirmation of Polish language proficiency includes:

1/ The official state exam in Polish as a foreign language, available at levels from B1 to C2, conducted under the Regulation of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of 26 February 2016 on examinations in Polish as a foreign language.

2/ The TELC Certificate B1/B2 (The European Language Certificates) at levels B1/B2 has been officially recognized in Poland since 31 May 2023 by decision of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration.

The key difference between these certificates lies in the rights they grant. The TELC certificate allows candidates to apply for the EU Long-Term Resident Card, pursue university studies in Polish, and be exempt from certain doctoral exams and language courses.

A B1 certificate or B2 certificate obtained through the state exam is widely recognized and grants the broadest rights, as it also allows applicants to apply for Polish citizenship and a Residence Card.
