Easter – is the most important Christian holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, i.e. the victory of life over death. What an eloquent symbol in 2022, in the 21st century, when an unjust war is being waged in the center of Europe, in Ukraine. A war in which one Slavic and Christian state – Putin’s Russia, sheds the blood of its brother Slavs, Christians – Ukrainians.
Yet although Poles do not experience hostility themselves, it is an extremely difficult experience for us. Being both Slavs and Christians, we consider freedom and peace to be the most important values of the modern world.
It is so difficult to concentrate on preparing for Easter now, knowing that millions of people have lost all their belongings, and often the roof over their heads. That is why we want to dedicate this time to our Ukrainian brothers and sisters, surrounding them with support, love, and whatever everyone can offer in their charity.
Traditional Easter in Poland
In Poland, Easter consists of a number of events. You probably noticed on Sunday 10th April, many people were walking with green or coloured twigs in their hands. These are EASTER PALMS – a symbol of Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Let them, this year, be a symbol of the triumphant Ukrainian flag over a free Ukraine!
Saturday 16th April is a special time of blessing food in the church. On this day, Christians prepare baskets full of food. They include bread, cold cuts, eggs, salt, pepper, and cake. They also put a lamb in the basket made of bread or sugar. However, in each region of Poland, the decoration and composition of Easter baskets differ from each other.
Traditionally, we celebrate Easter on two days: Sunday and Monday. This year, when we sit down at the table, our thoughts will be directed to Ukraine, and our wishes have one word: FREEDOM.
Holidays in the Orthodox rite, the religion of which are our Ukrainian brothers and sisters, will begin a week later. May it be a peaceful holiday, free from threats and fear for loved ones, in an independent country under the blue and yellow flag.
Let this holiday be not only a triumph of life over death in a symbolic dimension, but also a victory of PEACE over WAR in the here and now!
THE 3T’s – WE SUGGEST HOW TO LEARN POLISH EFFECTIVELY
Today is January 2022 – you’ve probably heard this question: ‘Do you have a New Year’s resolution?’ Although on the one hand, you say to yourself: ‘Enough of these resolutions, of which nothing comes from’, you subconsciously wonder, what will be your priority this year? Therefore, if learning Polish is an important goal for you that you would like to focus on in 2022, here are our suggestions on how to effectively achieve it!
THE 3 T’s: TARGET, TIME, THANKS
Research shows that a target should be defined, realistic and measurable, which means that when learning Polish, it is worth to first clarify your current knowledge of the language, and then determine the level that you would like to achieve in the given time. It is essential for the success of this target that the level you want to achieve is reasonable. There is nothing more frustrating about learning a foreign language than imagining yourself as a participant in a lively conversation once you have only just started your Beginner Polish course. Setting a high goal for yourself causes unnecessary stress and troubles.
So what to do? Verify your current level, which you can check by taking a test or come to the Polish Language School KLUB DIALOGU and talk to the teacher. At the beginning, take up small challenges. Depending on your needs, try to define your progress at the level of 2-3 modules, so that you always have the opportunity to adjust these achievements and set new goals. You will not pass the State B1 Certificate Exam immediately, but by taking small steps, you have a great chance to do so in the future!
Time is a very important element in achieving our targets, as it allows us to concentrate on the task at hand and prevents postponing it ‘for an eternal tomorrow’. As in the case of the target, time must be realistic, i.e. give us space to complete the full cycle of the process: learning, practice, and feedback. Properly defined time forces us to be specific and organised. Remember, however, that too short a time frame will not allow you to complete the process, and too long a time frame will blur its possibilities, and after some time you will not remember your priorities.
Don’t ignore the powerful influence of another person on your Polish language learning process. We instinctively hide our ‘resolutions’ from others because it protects us from embarrassment if something goes wrong. The involvement of other people, however, in our learning has a huge impact on its effectiveness. The support and feedback of people you can rely on can be very useful and can strengthen relationships, and thanks to this your learning will become more regular and consistent. It’s like losing weight, where positive support – from anguish – can turn into a healthy habit. Thanks to others, we can often achieve our goals!
Additionally, it is best to use qualified assistance. This is where the Polish Language School for Foreigners KLUB DIALOGU comes in handy, which offers a wide range of courses at various levels and intensity.
… and our passion! These are cyclical meetings organised for students by the Polish Language School for Foreigners KLUB DIALOGU, during which we present Polish films with English subtitles. These films are important for social, political and/or cultural reasons, and thanks to them we try to show our students the history, tradition and mentality of Poles over the last 70 years.
In 2020 and 2021, we had the opportunity to present to our students such films as ‘Corpus Christi’ directed by Jan Komasa – a film nominated for an Oscar, dealing with the issues of morality; good and evil in relation to living conditions and situations. ‘Jasminum’ (directed by J.J. Kolski) tells a mysterious and magical story, full of romance, scents, and light. In this story about monks, people, buildings and smells have their secrets. ‘Man – Woman Wanted’ – is a great comedy by the great director – Stanisław Bareja – showing the life of Poles during the communist era. ‘Vabank’ – an excellent Polish crime comedy directed by Juliusz Machulski, gives an insight into the life and urban planning of the city of Łódź in the 1980s. ‘Maids of Wilka’, directed by Andrzej Wajda, is a psychological film nominated for an Oscar in the non-English-language film category. The return of the main character to the countryside revives memories and old feelings, forcing you to reflect on your fate. ‘Wałęsa, Man of Hope’ – is a film telling the history of great political changes in Poland after 1980, which ended with the fall of communism in 1989 in Poland, and at the same time changed world politics forever …
Each time, FILM FRIDAY attracted great interest among students who were eager to participate in these meetings both at school and online. These events are a unique adventure into the past – a person from another country can better understand mechanisms and lifestyle in Poland, which greatly facilitates acclimatisation in a new country. Each screening of a film is preceded by a short overview of the background of its creation, the director’s idea and the message that the film carries with it. During these exciting meetings, we not only watch movies, but also discuss, finding similarities and differences in comparison to other countries. FILM FRIDAY is also an excellent activity within learning the Polish language, supplementing Polish courses at the school.
Do you dream of learning Polish? Are you looking for a Polish language course that would take place in small groups in the centre of Warsaw? Great! KLUB DIALOGU organises such classes! 5 TIPS FOR POLISH GROUP CLASSES
First of all, we want to teach you how to communicate freely in Polish and help you overcome communication barriers, which is why we have precisely divided learning levels (A0, A1, A2, B1, B2) into smaller modules to best match students according to their language skills. We also guarantee that learning will start immediately after the group gathers (min. 4 people, maximum 8).
1. Adjust the course level to your needs
We recommend taking a language test before starting the classes. It will allow you to check your level of Polish language skills and match a group with an appropriate level of sophistication. Such a test does not oblige you or cost you anything. We offer 17 modules within 5 levels in accordance with ALTE guidelines, therefore everyone can find a course for themselves.
2. Meet us at school!
Do you still have doubts? Do you want to see our school and get to know the teachers before you decide to enroll on a Polish language course? We understand this perfectly! Therefore, we invite you to KLUB DIALOGU, which is located in the city center, for a chat. Call us on +48 664 788 004 or just come and tell us what we can do for you. We are happy to know your needs and expectations. We will do our best to fulfill them. Meeting with the teacher is free of charge.
3. Start learning at any time
In KLUB DIALOGU school, there are Polish language courses for foreigners at all levels throughout the year. It is enough for a group of 4 to 8 people to gather. So don’t postpone it; take advantage of your internal motivation and start your adventure with the Polish language right away.
4. Learn in the very centre of Warsaw or … wherever you are comfortable
Learning Polish as a foreign language in Warsaw has many advantages. The location is one of them. KLUB DIALOGU is located in the very centre, so you can easily get to classes from anywhere in the city. Lessons can also take place outside of school, in a place chosen by the group. It can be, for example, a workplace or your favourite cafe. You can learn with an aromatic latte. Sounds nice?
5. Invite your friends to study together
Inviting friends to learn Polish together is a great idea! You will spend time together, establish relationships, learning and motivate each other. And you can use and deepen acquired skills after class. Together, you’ll simply get more out of the course. If there are at least four of you, we will open a group especially for you! A small number of students will give enough attention to each person. Visit KLUB DIALOGU and see for yourself!
